Bright and sensitive

Miniature Poodles learn patterns extremely quickly, including habits an owner did not intend to teach. They thrive with kind, clear and varied training and often enjoy retrieving, scent work, obedience or agility. Build time alone gradually because close attachment can become distress. This is not a decorative accessory: daily walks, safe social experience, free sniffing and meaningful choices remain basic needs regardless of small size.

Coat and activity

The continuously growing curls trap loose hair and form painful mats unless combed to the skin several times weekly. Professional clipping is usually needed every six to eight weeks. Low shedding does not mean hypoallergenic. Combine daily exercise with puzzles and calm recovery, and increase hard jumping or turning gradually in young dogs. Regular dental, ear and nail care supports comfort over a long lifespan.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch Poodle Club requires patellar assessment for toy, miniature and medium varieties as well as current ECVO eye screening. DNA tests for conditions including prcd-PRA and rcd4-PRA support the breeding plan but do not replace eye examination. Ask which additional tests fit the line and discuss epilepsy, dental, skin and heart problems in the family. Reject “teacup” marketing and select robust proportion, movement and diversity.
