Livestock guardian, not a white family pet
The Maremmano protected flocks without constant shepherd instructions. Independent decisions, night guarding and reserve with strangers remain. Socialise for controlled neutrality and establish safe procedures for visitors, deliveries and dogs. An ordinary town garden or an expectation of automatic obedience does not fit this breed.
Space and care
Large high-fenced ground is essential but does not replace shared walks and contact. Never leave the dog to bark unattended or decide who enters. Brush the double coat weekly and daily during shedding. Shaving disrupts protection. Increase load slowly and keep the large growing dog lean to protect joints.
Health and choosing a breeder
Dutch clubs require hips. Elbows are required by one and advised by another. Request original results and discuss patellas, eyes, gastric torsion, heart, skin and family behaviour. White colour alone is not a reason to select. Ask about hearing when concerned. Choose stable recovery, functional mass and genetic spread over maximum size or sharpness.
