Temperament and training

Labradors were developed to retrieve and usually enjoy carrying objects, using their nose and working with people. Many are open and quick to learn with reward-based training, but temperament varies between dogs and lines. Early socialisation, calm greeting practice and deliberate rest prevent enthusiasm becoming unmanageable. Working and show lines can differ considerably in drive and build, so ask which type fits your routine.

Coat, exercise and weight

The short, dense coat usually needs weekly brushing and extra attention while shedding. Labradors are active dogs that need sufficient walks and mental challenge. Retrieving, scent work and controlled swimming often suit them. Increase load gradually in a young dog and avoid repeated ball chasing, rough play, stairs and cycling while joints are developing. The breed is predisposed to obesity, so measure food and rewards, monitor body condition and keep the dog lean.

Health and choosing a breeder

In the Dutch population, elbow and hip dysplasia, atopy, obesity and cataract are major concerns. Ask for official elbow and hip results and a current ECVO eye examination for both parents. EIC, copper-associated liver disease and other DNA tests may be relevant to a line, but cannot replace clinical checks or family history. Look for free movement, lean parents and transparent discussion of skin disease and longevity.
