Understand the type offered

Crossing two breeds does not produce a fixed average. One Labradoodle may resemble a Labrador in coat and appetite, another a Poodle in sensitivity and activity, while multigenerational Australian lines use a broader recorded programme. Meet the mother, ask what type and generation the litter is and assess both parent breeds honestly. Early home socialisation, reward-based training and gradual time alone matter more than a friendly marketing label.

Coat and activity

Low shedding is not low maintenance. Loose hair can remain trapped in waves or curls, causing painful mats unless the coat is combed to the skin several times a week and clipped professionally. No dog is guaranteed hypoallergenic. Spend time with the individual and seek medical advice before committing. Provide daily walking, retrieving, swimming where safe, scent work and calm recovery while avoiding uncontrolled repetitive exercise in growing dogs.

Health and purchase

Ask for official hip, elbow and ECVO eye results and DNA tests relevant to both Labrador and Poodle lines. A registry such as ALAEU records ancestry and maintains breeding rules for Australian Labradoodles, but buyers must still inspect original documents and the relatedness of this specific pairing. Crosses are not automatically healthier, and a commercial DNA panel cannot replace imaging, family history or transparent follow-up of adult offspring.
