Working-terrier temperament

Jack Russells were developed in England to hunt foxes in their dens and later control farm vermin. That history appears as courage, prey drive, digging and persistence. They can learn a great deal but remain independently minded and need consistent, friendly training. Practise recall and control around wildlife from an early age. Prey drive can make small pets and off-lead exercise in unsecured places unsafe.

Coat and activity

Smooth coats need occasional brushing. Broken and rough coats should be hand stripped periodically rather than clipped if texture is to be preserved. Adults need more than a short neighbourhood walk. Combine active outings with scent searches, digging outlets, training and rest. Build jumping and fast sport only after growth. A secure garden matters because a bored terrier can dig under or squeeze through surprisingly small gaps.

Health and choosing a breeder

Primary lens luxation and cataract are the leading Dutch inherited concerns. Patellar luxation, other eye disease and congenital deafness also occur. Breed clubs require patella and eye examinations. JRV also requires a DNA test for primary lens luxation. Ask for official results and discuss hearing and disease among relatives. A DNA result covers only the tested variant. Stable behaviour and honest information about prey drive and digging matter more than coat type.
