Close cooperation

Vizslas were selected to work near the handler before and after the shot. Many seek constant contact and struggle when suddenly left for long periods. Build independence gradually from puppyhood and train kindly, because physical correction can damage trust. Hunting drive requires reliable long-line management, secure boundaries and an outlet through scent work, retrieving or regulated field activities rather than uncontrolled wildlife chasing.

Exercise and care

The short coat mainly needs weekly checks of skin, ears, feet and nails. Adults require substantial varied daily exercise, but growing joints should not endure kilometre runs or endless jumping. Combine fitness with nose work, impulse control and rest. Maintain a lean body condition and dry the ears after swimming, an activity many Vizslas enjoy. Teach settling so that high endurance does not dominate home life.

Health and choosing a breeder

Current Dutch club policy requires official hip screening and ECVO eye examination including gonioscopy before mating. Inspect original results for both parents and discuss epilepsy, cancer, autoimmune or skin disease and longevity among relatives. A DNA panel cannot replace imaging, eye examination or family evidence. Choose a stable pairing whose breeder can explain working ability and recovery honestly, and avoid litters marketed mainly on colour or popularity.
