Temperament and training

Havanese are sociable companion dogs that usually prefer joining an activity to watching from another room. They learn tricks quickly, respond well to rewards and often retain playful behaviour into adulthood. That closeness can become separation difficulty unless short, relaxed absences are practised early. Socialisation should include friendly people and dogs as well as the ability to ignore them. Barking at every hallway sound can be reduced by rewarding quiet observation and providing enough mental activity.

Grooming and exercise

A long natural coat needs frequent line-combing down to the skin, especially behind ears, in armpits and around the legs. A shorter pet trim is practical but still requires brushing and scheduled grooming. Keep eyes, ears, feet and teeth clean and introduce every procedure gradually. Daily walks, sniffing and games maintain fitness without demanding endurance sport. Avoid treating a small dog as fragile luggage: safe movement, exploration and training build confidence and muscle.

Health and choosing a breeder

Patellar luxation and inherited eye disease are the principal Dutch screening concerns. Hip or cardiac disease occurs in some lines. Ask for official patella assessment and a current ECVO eye examination, including cataract evaluation, and have the breeder explain which additional tests suit the pairing. Family temperament and longevity matter beyond the two parents. Avoid puppies advertised with non-standard miniature labels or unusual colour premiums. Choose quiet breathing, sound movement and a curious temperament that recovers readily after a surprise.
