Temperament and everyday life
Goldens are people-oriented gundogs that normally enjoy cooperation, retrieving and close family life. Careful socialisation can make them adaptable companions, but a gentle reputation never removes the need for boundaries, rest and supervision around children. Working lines may carry substantially more drive than show lines. Ask about the parents' activity, confidence and resource behaviour and choose for the household you actually have.
Coat and activity
The flat or wavy coat has a dense, water-resistant undercoat. Brush regularly and check the ears, armpits and feathering for tangles. Dry the ears after swimming. Goldens need considerable activity and mental challenge and often enjoy retrieving and water. Match load to age and condition. A young dog should not repeatedly chase balls or cover long distances while joints are developing, and a lean body condition reduces avoidable strain.
Health and choosing a breeder
Hip and elbow dysplasia, inherited eye disease and several cancers deserve particular attention. Ask for official hip and elbow results and a current ECVO eye examination for both parents, and verify documents where possible through the Dutch Kennel Club. No test can promise a cancer-free puppy, so discuss diagnoses, causes of death and longevity among parents, grandparents and siblings. Functional movement and stable behaviour matter more than an unusually pale coat.
