Background and temperament
The breed was developed in Germany as a large black German service and guard dog with great power, speed, territorial instinct and a harsh stripping coat. That original task still shapes drive, pace and independence. Expect the breed behaviour described here and do not choose on appearance alone. Provide clear reward-based rules, reliable lead skills and suitable work without deliberately increasing guarding drive, physical intensity or sharpness. Start socialisation, solitude and calm handling while young, using rewards and clear predictable boundaries. A stable dog can recover from new stimuli without continually barking, fleeing or threatening.
Exercise and daily care
Combine daily conditioning with task-focused mental work, regulate jumping and heavy pulling while growing and provide undisturbed rest too. Coat care is: Harsh black coat with undercoat and beard.
