Respect lasting independence, train without force and use a secure lead and fencing where prey drive or reserve limits reliability. Start socialisation, solitude and calm handling while young, using rewards and clear predictable boundaries. A stable dog can recover from new stimuli without continually barking, fleeing or threatening.

Exercise and daily care

Combine long walks with scent work and secure free movement, protect against the relevant climate and monitor escape behaviour. Coat care is: Medium-length thick double coat. Brush weekly and daily while shedding. Also inspect ears, teeth, nails, skin and pads weekly. Keep the dog lean and increase running, jumping, cycling or heavy work gradually while growing.
