Short-coated livestock guardian

The Estrela guarded flocks independently and does not automatically act simply because an owner asks. It is loyal to household members and reserved with strangers. Socialise carefully without forcing contact and manage visitors, couriers and other dogs safely. It does not suit beginners or a busy urban environment.

Exercise and growth

Large fenced land is necessary, but shared daily walks and training remain essential. Brush the short double coat weekly and more during shedding. Keep the fast-growing dog lean and increase stairs, jumping and long distances gradually. Prevent unsupervised barking at night.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch breed information advises hip and elbow screening. Request both official results plus eye and family records on gastric torsion, heart, thyroid disease and behaviour. Verify Portuguese import pedigree, inbreeding and the correct coat variety. Choose stable recovery, functional mass and free movement over maximum size or sharpness.
