The long-haired Estrela protected livestock without continuous direction. It accepts its own household but may repel strangers loudly and forcefully. Build calm neutrality, use physical separation for visitors and do not expect unquestioning obedience. Rewards and consistent routines work more safely than confrontation.

Long coat and large growth

Comb the double coat to the skin weekly and daily during shedding, especially behind ears and around breeches and tail. Shaving removes protection. Provide shared walks alongside fenced land and keep the growing dog lean. Increase loads gradually and offer cool dry rest. A heavy wet coat must dry completely.
