Temperament and training

The English Cocker is designed to search cover and work closely with a person. Many are outgoing family dogs, while working-bred lines may have particularly intense drive. Reward-based recall, retrieving and settle training give that enthusiasm useful direction. Early socialisation should include calm handling, traffic, visitors and other animals. Ask a breeder what the parents actually do and how their energy fits ordinary family life. Appearance alone does not reveal the difference between breeding lines.

Exercise and grooming

Daily walks should include sniffing, training and safe off-lead activity where recall allows. Repetitive ball chasing can over-arouse some dogs, so alternate action with searching and rest. Comb feathering to the skin several times a week and arrange regular trimming if needed. Long ears restrict ventilation and collect moisture or seeds. Check and dry them after swimming or country walks. Maintain a lean body condition and begin tooth, paw and ear handling while the puppy is relaxed.

Health and choosing a breeder

Distichiasis and recurrent otitis are among the principal Dutch problems. Other eye disease, hip dysplasia and familial nephropathy also occur. Dutch breed clubs require hip assessment, an ECVO eye examination and/or PRA DNA test, and a DNA test for familial nephropathy. Ask for the official results of both parents and discuss chronic ear and skin disease in the wider family. Observe the mother for stable behaviour and avoid coat or ear exaggeration that interferes with an athletic outline.
