Temperament and everyday life

Bulldogs are generally friendly, gentle, fairly calm and happiest near their household. They enjoy attention and occasional games but can also be headstrong. Their popularity must not obscure the consequences of a very short muzzle and heavy build. Training should remain positive and brief, with attention to handling, calm greetings and weight control. A healthy dog should walk freely, sleep without struggling for air and recover promptly from gentle activity.

Care, movement and heat

Use several short walks to maintain muscle without pushing a dog beyond safe breathing. Hot or humid weather can become dangerous quickly. Exercise at cool times, carry water and stop before distress develops. Keep facial and tail folds clean and dry, examine feet and skin, and brush teeth frequently. A harness can avoid pressure on the airway. Lean body condition matters greatly because excess weight increases strain on breathing, joints and temperature control.

Health and choosing a breeder

BOAS, entropion, cherry eye, inflamed skin folds and feet, hip dysplasia and difficult birth are important risks. Dutch breeding dogs must meet six legal criteria: normal breathing at rest, sufficiently open nostrils, a craniofacial ratio of at least 0.5, no harmful nose fold, no visible sclera and fully closing eyelids. Only the legally limited 0.3–0.5 route remains possible when every other criterion is met. Below 0.3 breeding is prohibited. Ask for the veterinary declaration, choose parents that move and breathe freely and reject dogs that required airway surgery.
