Working temperament

Dutch Shepherds were used to herd flocks and also as guard, draft and working dogs. They are active, intelligent, attached and focused on their owner, while also taking independent initiative. They may be reserved with strangers. Calm socialisation and clear, consistent, positive guidance are important. True working lines can demand far more activity and skilled handling than an ordinary home can offer, so assess the parents and the breeder's purpose.

Coat, exercise and recovery

The short brindle coat needs occasional brushing outside shedding and more during coat change. The dog itself requires far more time: long walks, scent work, obedience, tracking or technically appropriate sport. Chasing and constant arousal are not substitutes for structured training. Teach settling, handling and neutral behaviour around people and dogs from puppyhood. Young joints need gradual loading, secure surfaces and adequate sleep.

Health and choosing a breeder

Current Dutch research identifies no common inherited condition requiring urgent attention in the population. Hip and elbow dysplasia remain concerns. Goniodysplasia with glaucoma is specific to the rough-haired variety. VVHH requires hip assessment and NHC recommends it. Both clubs require a behaviour test. Ask which rules apply to the selected short-haired line, inspect official results and discuss joint health and behaviour among relatives.
