Powerful guardian

The Dogue de Bordeaux is strong, heavy and often reserved or selective with dogs. Socialise for neutrality, train through rewards and manage visitors and children physically safely. Growing dogs must not be overworked to make them look powerful. Size, drool and limited heat tolerance require a concrete transport and housing plan.

Breathing and mass

The short muzzle can cause BOAS, heat intolerance, eye damage and difficult birth. Awake snoring, retching, blue gums or poor recovery are not breed sounds. Additional Dutch brachycephalic pedigree conditions apply. Choose open nostrils, visible muzzle, minimal folds and a dog that walks and breathes freely. Maintain lean weight.

Health and choosing a breeder

Club rules require hips and elbows. Also request specialist cardiac ultrasound, ECVO eyes and family records on dilated cardiomyopathy, cancer, gastric torsion, skin and longevity. Inspect official results and the brachycephaly declaration for both parents. Select natural reproduction, functional build and longer-lived relatives over maximum head, underbite or weight.
