Temperament and training

Dobermanns are quick learners that often remain close to their handler throughout the day. Good examples are confident and responsive rather than indiscriminately sharp. Socialisation should teach calm behaviour around visitors, traffic, animals and handling, supported by reward-based obedience and impulse control. They need a role and regular human contact. Long isolation is a poor fit. Adolescence can be demanding, so owners should plan for skilled instruction before the powerful adult dog appears.

Exercise and daily care

A healthy adult needs substantial daily activity alongside scent work, problem solving or a suitable dog sport. Increase impact exercise gradually while the skeleton matures and teach rest as deliberately as action. The fine coat is simple to brush but offers little insulation in cold, wet weather. Keep nails short, protect a lean body condition and inspect feet after high-speed activity. Secure fencing and a trained recall are essential because speed and curiosity can cover distance quickly.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a severe breed risk that cannot be excluded by one lifetime test. The Dutch DCM covenant uses annual heart ultrasound and 24-hour Holter monitoring by a registered veterinary cardiologist. Ask for results no more than one year old for both parents and for heart-related deaths among relatives. Discuss von Willebrand DNA status, hips, thyroid and neurological problems. No breeder can promise a DCM-free puppy, but repeated screening and honest longevity data reduce avoidable risk. Avoid exaggerated size and unstable temperaments.
