Temperament and training

Dachshunds were bred to pursue quarry underground, explaining their courage, persistence, voice and independent decisions. At home they can be affectionate and entertaining, but recall and quiet behaviour require patient training. Their nose often outweighs obedience outdoors. Use rewards, secure areas and realistic expectations rather than force. Early socialisation with people, dogs and handling helps prevent caution becoming defensive behaviour.

Movement and back care

The smooth coat needs only occasional brushing. Regular walking and sniffing build useful muscle, while obesity places additional load on the long spine. Reduce repeated stair use and uncontrolled jumps from furniture or vehicles and provide ramps where practical. Total inactivity is not protective: a lean, conditioned dog needs normal movement. Sudden pain, a hunched back, weakness or loss of coordination requires urgent veterinary assessment.

Health and choosing a breeder

Mitral valve degeneration and intervertebral disc disease with herniation are the leading Dutch inherited concerns. Herniation can cause severe pain and paralysis. Ask about cardiac and spinal disease and surgery among parents, siblings and older generations. The breed club requires parental eye examinations for cataract, PRA and distichiasis. Inspect the original results. Keep the dog lean and treat sudden pain, a hunched back, weakness or loss of coordination as reasons for urgent veterinary care.
