Background and temperament

Across volcanic terrain around Mount Etna the Cirneco hunted rabbits and other small game using eyes, ears and nose. That original task still shapes drive, pace and independence. Expect the breed behaviour described here and do not choose on appearance alone. Train recall without overestimating safety, use high fencing and supervise contact with cats and small pets carefully. Start socialisation, solitude and calm handling while young, using rewards and clear predictable boundaries. A stable dog can recover from new stimuli without continually barking, fleeing or threatening.

Exercise and daily care

Combine long walks with short secure sprints, protect fine skin from cold and inspect ears and feet after rocky terrain. Coat care is: Short, fine and tan. Brush gently every week. Also inspect ears, teeth, nails, skin and pads weekly. Keep the dog lean and increase running, jumping, cycling or heavy work gradually while growing.
