Independent temperament

Chow Chows often keep their distance and prefer to control physical contact. That should not mean unstable behaviour: sound breeding dogs recover calmly from new situations and accept gentle handling. Never force affection, teach children to respect distance signals and socialise a puppy carefully with people, dogs, grooming and veterinary procedures. Short reward-based sessions generally work better than confrontation with this strong self-directed breed.

Coat, heat and movement

Comb the abundant double coat to the skin several times weekly and check armpits, ruff, ears and tail base for mats or inflammation. Coat and compact build make hot weather hazardous, so schedule cool walks and provide a comfortable resting climate. Moderate daily activity supports muscles and weight. A stiff short gait or reluctance to move should never be dismissed as normal breed type.

Health and purchase

Entropion and other eye disease, hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation and skin problems require screening. The Dutch club breeding rules examine hips, elbows, knees and eyes. Review every original result, watch both parents move and look for clear eyes without excessive folds. Discuss thyroid disease, gastric torsion and early mobility problems among relatives. Choose free vision, sound breathing and fluid movement over an extremely broad head or exaggerated coat.
