Chihuahua Smooth Coat for sale in the Netherlands
The smooth-coated Chihuahua is a tiny but active companion that needs normal dog training and careful physical protection. Extreme miniaturisation, skull shape and patella or liver health require scrutiny.

Temperament and safe socialisation
Chihuahuas are active, vigilant dogs that often form a close bond and may be bolder than their body can safely support. Carrying a puppy everywhere prevents normal learning, while uncontrolled encounters with large dogs can be dangerous. Socialise at ground level with carefully selected people and dogs, teach quiet behaviour, solitude and handling with rewards, and never treat fear or snapping as an inevitable small-dog trait. Young children require particularly close supervision.
Coat, exercise and fragility
The smooth coat needs little brushing but provides limited protection from Dutch cold and rain. A functional coat can help in poor weather, while indoor toilet habits never replace walks. Use a very light secure harness, prevent falls and rough play and establish daily dental care. A fit Chihuahua can enjoy substantial walks at an individual pace. Extremely small puppies are more vulnerable to fractures and low blood sugar.
Health and choosing a breeder
Patellar luxation, portosystemic liver shunt and hydrocephalus are important Dutch risks. Extreme miniaturisation increases fragility. Chihuahuas are also classed among short-skulled breeds, so Dutch breeding criteria for respiration, nostrils, muzzle and eyes apply. Breed clubs require patella assessment and EGCN advises an ECVO eye examination. Ask for original results, family liver and neurological history and the veterinary declaration where applicable. Never buy a dog marketed as “mini”, “toy” or “teacup”.
