Temperament and company

Cavaliers are often affectionate, cheerful companions that enjoy activity with their owner. Their spaniel background can appear outdoors as independent scent following. Calm, consistent reward-based training suits their sensitive nature. Practise recall and teach time alone gradually. Supervise children, and do not automatically interpret unusual inactivity as a gentle temperament: pain or heart disease can restrict activity.

Coat, ears and movement

Brush the feathered coat several times a week, focusing on ears, armpits and feet, and keep ears dry after water. Daily walks support heart, weight and mobility, although pain or respiratory limits must be investigated rather than trained through. Scratching near the neck, air scratching, reluctance to jump, unexplained yelping or head sensitivity can be warning signs of neurological or middle-ear disease.

Health and choosing a breeder

Mitral valve degeneration, Chiari-like malformation with syringomyelia and primary secretory otitis media are major Dutch concerns. Breed clubs require screening for heart disease, patellar luxation and syringomyelia. Ask for original results, the age and heart health of older relatives and MRI or neurological information from the line. The relatively short skull also brings Dutch short-muzzle criteria into scope. Quiet breathing does not exclude CM/SM pain.
