Traditional guardian

The Castro Laboreiro guarded flocks and villages in rugged northern Portugal. It bonds with its own people and can strongly reject strangers. Socialise for neutrality, organise visits with physical separation and do not expect a relaxed dog-park companion. Reward-based rules and predictability are safer than harshness or confrontation.

Space and functional body

High robust fencing and rural land are necessary but do not replace shared walks and contact. Brush the short coarse coat weekly and inspect feet and skin. Increase loads gradually and keep the powerful dog lean. Never leave it to decide unsupervised who may enter the property.

Health and choosing a breeder

There is no recognised Dutch breed club. Request official hip, elbow and ECVO results and family records on epilepsy, heart, gastric torsion and behaviour. Verify Portuguese FCI ancestry, import papers and inbreeding. Meet adult relatives away from their territory and choose manageable recovery and durable movement over sharpness or rarity.
