Pariah dog with guarding instinct
The Canaan Dog developed around desert settlements and flocks and retains strong alertness and territorial reserve. Socialisation should build safe neutrality and recovery, not forced handling by everyone. Train with rewards, manage visitors and prevent barking or lunging from repeatedly succeeding in driving strangers away.
Exercise and natural coat
Long daily walks, tracking and short varied training suit the breed. Use a lead and high fencing. Independence and prey drive can limit recall. Brush weekly and daily during shedding. Keep this economical dog lean and provide cool rest in heat even though the breed developed in a dry climate.
Health and choosing a breeder
There is no recognised Dutch breed club. Request official hip, elbow and ECVO results and family records on patellas, epilepsy, thyroid disease and behaviour. Verify FCI pedigree, inbreeding and import papers. Choose stable recovery, social manageability and genetic diversity over the wildest possible appearance or extreme distrust.
