Small hunter among rocks
Cairns hunted small game among Scottish stone piles. They are cheerful and trainable, but prey drive and independence require consistent reward-based training. Practise recall and cat interactions early and use secure boundaries outdoors. Daily walks and scent work help channel digging and barking appropriately.
Stripping coat and daily care
Brush twice weekly and have the harsh topcoat expertly hand-stripped two to four times a year. Clipping or shaving damages its texture. Monitor teeth, skin, knees and weight and increase jumping gradually. An adult Cairn should be small but muscular and active.
Health and choosing a breeder
The Dutch club requires no parental screening but does require puppies to be tested for liver shunt. Request the individual result before transfer, plus patella and ECVO information and family records on craniomandibular osteopathy, globoid cell leukodystrophy and eye disease. Choose transparent lines and free movement over colour or smallest size.
