Late-maturing guardian

Bullmastiffs grow quickly and mature mentally late. Start reward-based training, calm visitor management and reliable lead skills as a puppy. Males may later become competitive with other males. Never leave the heavy dog unsupervised with children or dogs. A good-natured temperament does not remove the physical consequences of a collision.

Growth and breathing

Avoid extreme loading in the first year but provide normal free movement for muscles and coordination. Keep the dog lean and cool. Open nostrils and quiet recovery are essential. Awake snoring, retching or breathlessness are not normal. Additional Dutch brachycephalic pedigree conditions apply.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch clubs require hip and elbow screening. Also request specialist cardiac assessment, ECVO eyes and family records on gastric torsion, cancer, cruciate disease and longevity. Review the brachycephaly declaration and original results for both parents. Choose free breathing, functional mass and stable behaviour over maximum head width or weight.
