Power and clownish character

Bull Terriers are often people-oriented and playful, but their strength, persistence and possible dog selectivity require experienced management. Socialise carefully, train with rewards and teach reliable release, settling and muzzle use. Never leave children and dogs unsupervised and avoid repeated rough collision and jumping games while growing.

Skin, feet and movement

Brush the short coat weekly and inspect skin, ears, feet and nails. Breed-specific instructions mention skin irritation, thin hair cover, poorly formed feet and uncertain behaviour. Keep the muscular dog lean and provide varied exercise without compulsion. Extensive white requires individual hearing screening, not a clap test at home.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch clubs require BAER testing for cochlear deafness. One club also requires cardiac ultrasound for mitral valve dysplasia and aortic stenosis, kidney ultrasound and a UPC urine test. Request every result plus patella and family records. Since 1 January 2026, offspring of a deaf parent cannot receive a pedigree. Choose stable behaviour and functional feet over exaggerated head type.
