Calm but enormous dog

The Broholmer was restored as an estate and guard dog after almost disappearing. It should be friendly and confident, but size alone demands thorough socialisation, lead skills and safe supervision around children and dogs. Train calmly with rewards and prevent guarding or physical force becoming its own solution.

Gradual growth

Keep puppies and adults lean and increase stairs, jumping and long distances slowly. Daily exercise remains important for muscle development. Brush the short coat weekly and provide a soft spacious bed and cool accommodation. Manage meals around exercise and know the acute signs of gastric torsion.

Health and choosing a breeder

There is no recognised Dutch breed club. Request official hip and elbow results, specialist cardiac examination and family records on gastric torsion, cancer, thyroid disease and longevity. The reconstruction history makes Danish ancestry and relatedness important. Choose functional mass, free movement and long-lived relatives over maximum size.
