Versatile working hound
The Briquet gathers, drives and follows game and does not give up easily. Sociability does not automatically make it an easy house dog. Without hunting-oriented work it may be vocal and take its own initiative. Use reward-based training, a long line and secure fencing. Plan long distances and serious tracking every day.
Rough field coat
Brush weekly and have the coat functionally hand-stripped about twice a year. Inspect drop ears, beard, feet and ticks after outdoor work. Keep the dog lean and increase long terrain loads gradually. Provide appropriate chewing and brush teeth. A rough coat does not prevent skin or ear disease.
Health and choosing a breeder
The Dutch breed club requires ECVO eye examination. Also request hip information and family records on epilepsy, thyroid disease, ears and gastric torsion. Review original results and inbreeding within the small population. Choose durable movement, social recovery and transparent working longevity over maximum hunting passion or rare colour.
