Herding dog with guarding instinct

Briards herded and guarded flocks and can make independent decisions. Socialise for calm neutrality and practise visitors, children, dogs and handling early. Train with rewards and consistent rules. Harsh treatment can amplify insecurity or conflict. Daily work and family contact are needed alongside a clear off-switch.

Long functional coat

Comb in layers to the skin several times weekly, particularly around ears, armpits, groin and feet. Keep hair clear of eyes and ear canals and inspect the double rear dewclaws. A practical length matters more than show volume. Increase jumping and endurance work gradually and keep this large athlete lean.

Health and choosing a breeder

Request official hip and ECVO results and family records on CSNB night blindness, thyroid disease, gastric torsion, cancer and behaviour. Relevant DNA tests must be combined with clinical screening. Review original documents and meet parents away from their own territory. Choose free movement, healthy eyes and stable recovery over maximum coat or guarding drive.
