Large French pointing type

The Gascony type is larger and heavier than the Pyrenean type and works as a versatile pointer. It thrives on searching, pointing and retrieving and needs prolonged exercise every day. Train gently and consistently with variety. Pressure and harsh correction disrupt its sensitive cooperation. Practise recall and calm waiting around game early.

Field care and workload

Brush the short coat weekly and inspect long ears, feet, eyes and ticks after work. Keep the dog lean and delay galloping and cycling until growth is complete. Manage meals around hard exercise and know the signs of gastric torsion. A hunting dog also needs company and undisturbed sleep indoors.

Health and choosing a breeder

There is no recognised Dutch breed club. Request official hip, elbow and ECVO results and family records on epilepsy, heart, kidneys and gastric torsion. Verify FCI ancestry, import documents and inbreeding. Choose durable movement, gentle stable parents and long working lives over maximum size or field results alone.
