Calm with guarding ability

The Flemish Bouvier worked as cattle driver, draft and farm dog. It appears calm but can intervene independently. Socialise carefully with visitors, children, dogs and traffic and train through rewards and clear routines. Because of strength and late maturity, impulse control and cooperative handling matter more than intimidating protection exercises.

Working coat and body

Comb to the skin at least weekly and have the coat functionally trimmed several times yearly. Remove dead undercoat and inspect beard, ears and feet. Long daily walks and tracking or obedience are needed. Keep the dog lean and increase pulling, jumping and running loads gradually.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch clubs require hip, elbow and ECVO eye examination. Also ask about heart disease, thyroid disease, gastric torsion, laryngeal paralysis and cancer in relatives. Review original Dutch Dog Data results and meet parents outside a show stance. Select free movement, stable behaviour and moderate coat over maximum mass or sharpness.
