Working hunting dog

The Barak hunts hare, fox and wild boar and follows scent for long periods with a hard carrying voice. Dutch breed information explicitly calls it unsuitable as an ordinary house dog. It needs appropriate hunting or tracking work every day, robust fencing and skilled lead management. Do not expect reliable off-lead exercise around wildlife.

Coat and condition

Comb the weatherproof rough coat weekly and inspect beard, ears, feet and ticks after terrain work. Increase endurance gradually and keep the dog lean. Kennelling may be practical during work, but permanent isolation harms social welfare and does not prevent barking or conflict.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch Brakken Club requires no testing. Ask independently for official hips, elbows and current eye examination, plus family information on epilepsy, thyroid disease, ears and working longevity. The breed is extremely rare locally. Verify FCI pedigree, import papers and inbreeding. Select manageable behaviour and durable movement over sharpness or hunting result alone.
