A sighthound making its own decisions

Borzois were selected for sight hunting and do not respond like obedience breeds. Train with rewards, patience and short clear sessions. Harsh correction damages trust. Prey behaviour can switch on suddenly, so off-lead exercise is responsible only on high securely enclosed ground. Socialise calmly and never leave this large dog unsupervised with small children or unfamiliar small animals.

Exercise and coat

Daily walks and regular free sprinting maintain body and mind. Increase loads slowly and avoid hard exercise around large meals because of gastric torsion risk. Comb weekly, paying particular attention behind the ears and around the trousers. Cutting or stripping is unnecessary. An adult Borzoi should be lean but muscular rather than weak.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch club rules require DNA testing for degenerative myelopathy. Also request cardiac assessment and family information on sudden death, gastric torsion, eyes and longevity. Discuss anaesthesia with a sighthound-experienced veterinarian. Review original results, relatedness and adult relatives. One clear DNA result is not a general certificate of health.
