A working terrier in a small body

Border Terriers followed horses and worked underground. They are often social with people and dogs, but prey drive around cats, rodents and wildlife remains individually strong. Train recall and impulse control early and use secure containment. Long daily walks and scent work fit better than only brief outings.

Coat and condition

Brush weekly and have the harsh coat hand-stripped about twice a year. Clipping softens its protective texture. Keep the terrier lean, inspect teeth, skin and feet and increase demanding sport gradually. A healthy Border can exercise extensively, but rest and solitude training also belong in a balanced upbringing.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch club rules currently require no testing. Ask proactively about patellas, ECVO eyes, heart and family records on canine epileptoid cramping syndrome or CECS, gallbladder disease, allergy and longevity. Video alone proves neither diagnosis nor health. Select a breeder who records problems, limits relatedness and shows adults with stable social behaviour.
