Herding behaviour and training

Border Collies were selected to read and control livestock. Without careful guidance, the same response to movement may target bicycles, running children or other animals. They learn rapidly, can be sensitive to stimuli and need an active, stable owner with dog experience. Working, sport and show lines may differ greatly. Ask about drive, recovery and behaviour among parents and relatives, and use precise, friendly training without harsh correction.

Exercise without constant arousal

Weekly brushing usually maintains either coat variety. The larger commitment is balancing physical exercise, problem solving and recovery. Hiking, scent work, herding and technically sound dog sport can suit an adult, while endless ball throwing may build fixation rather than wellbeing. Teach puppies to sleep, wait and settle around normal life. More exercise is not always the answer to a dog that has never learned an off switch.

Health and choosing a breeder

Idiopathic epilepsy and the MDR1 mutation are important Dutch concerns. IGS, congenital deafness, CEA, primary lens luxation and PRA also occur. Breed clubs require hip assessment and an ECVO eye examination. Additional requirements differ by club and line. Ask for MDR1 status, official results and family history of seizures, deafness or collapse. Select DNA tests to match the lines used and remember that even a broad DNA panel cannot exclude every inherited disease.
