An exceptional nose

A Bloodhound can follow a human trail for hours and ordinary obedience cannot make off-lead exercise reliably safe. Use strong well-fitted equipment, a long line and purposeful tracking. Train gently: the breed is sensitive but physically very powerful. Voice, drool and size require realistic planning for neighbours, vehicles and the home.

No excess skin

Inspect eyes, ears, lip folds and neck daily for redness, odour and wounds. Breed-specific guidance warns about eye disease and excessively heavy folds. Ectropion, entropion or chronically inflamed wet skin is not normal type. Keep the dog lean, increase exercise gradually and treat gastric torsion signs as an immediate emergency.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch club currently lists no compulsory screening. Ask independently for hips, elbows, ECVO eyes and heart examination and family records on gastric torsion, cancer, epilepsy and longevity. Watch parents awake and moving and ask about eye or skin surgery. Select functional eyelids, less skin and genetic diversity over maximum wrinkle or head volume.
