Nose and a powerful voice
Coonhounds were selected to follow a trail independently and call loudly when game was located. That deep voice and night-working drive rarely suit an apartment. Train recall and settling early but expect to use a lead or long line outdoors. They are often friendly, while size and excitement require supervision around children and small animals.
Exercise and care
Long daily walks, searching and secure running are necessary. A garden alone is insufficient. Brush the short coat weekly and inspect long ears and feet after terrain work. Keep the large dog lean and increase heavy loads gradually. Manage meals around exercise and know the signs of gastric torsion.
Health and choosing a breeder
There is no recognised Dutch breed club. Request official hip and elbow evaluation, ECVO eyes and cardiac assessment and discuss hypothyroidism, ear disease, gastric torsion and haemophilia B in the family. Verify imported pedigree and relatedness. Choose a breeder who can handle adult dogs outside hunting and openly shares full results.
