Specialist French pack hound

The Billy was developed for large-game pack hunting. It combines speed and scent with a carrying voice and Dutch breed information notes potential quarrels with pack mates. Select and manage dog contact carefully and do not expect an easy urban or park companion. Prolonged purposeful work and robust fencing are fundamental requirements.

Condition and daily care

Delay long distances and galloping workloads until physical maturity. Keep the large athlete lean and provide recovery after hard work. Brush the short coat weekly and inspect ears, feet, muscles and ticks. Manage meals around work and recognise gastric torsion. Permanent solitary kennel confinement is not a solution to social or behaviour problems.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch Brakken Club requires no testing. Still request official hip, elbow and eye assessment and family records on heart disease, epilepsy, gastric torsion and behaviour. The breed is internationally rare: verify FCI ancestry, import papers, inbreeding and working longevity. Choose manageable social behaviour and durable movement over rarity, speed or hunting results.
