Temperament and training

Bichons were developed as companion dogs and usually want to be involved in everyday family life. They are bright, playful and generally outgoing with people and other dogs. Reward-based training suits their sensitive nature, while early practice with being alone helps prevent distress when the household leaves. Their friendly appearance does not remove the need for calm socialisation, clear house rules and regular mental activity. A Bichon is small enough for an apartment, but not a dog that should spend most days without company.

Grooming and exercise

The white curls shed relatively little into the home because loose hair remains in the coat. That also means matting develops unless the coat is brushed and combed to the skin several times a week. Most owners use a professional groomer every four to eight weeks. Keep the eyes and beard clean, check the ears and make tooth brushing routine from puppyhood. Daily walks, sniffing games and brief training keep a Bichon fit. Coat maintenance is not a substitute for exercise.

Health and choosing a breeder

Patellar luxation, inherited eye disease and urinary stones are recognised concerns. Allergies and dental disease also occur. For dogs bred in the Netherlands, ask for official patella results and a recent ECVO eye examination for both parents, and discuss bladder or kidney stones in the family. Tear staining has several causes and should not simply be hidden with cosmetics. Choose a puppy that breathes quietly, moves freely and has been raised in a clean home. A responsible breeder explains the lifetime grooming cost and never markets the coat as completely hypoallergenic.
