Swiss running hound

The Bernese Hound follows game for long periods and with voice, often independently or in a pack. It is generally social and gentle, but a trail can override recall. Teach contact and rest early, use a long line outdoors and offer real tracking tasks. Close housing is a poor fit when vocal behaviour is a problem.

Exercise and care

Long daily walks and controlled running after maturity are essential. Increase distance and terrain work gradually and keep the dog lean. Brush the short coat weekly and inspect long ears, feet and ticks after outdoor work. Manage feeding around hard activity and recognise the urgent signs of gastric torsion.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch Brakken Club currently requires no screening. Ask independently for official hip and eye information and family records on epilepsy, ears, thyroid disease, gastric torsion and working longevity. The Dutch population is small. Verify FCI pedigree, import papers, inbreeding and relatedness. Select social stability and durable movement over voice, colour or hunting achievement alone.
