Independent droving dog
Bergamascos worked with a shepherd but also made independent decisions. They are generally people-oriented and playful, while territorial vigilance needs guidance. Train respectfully through rewards and clear routines. Long daily walks, searching and varied cooperation suit them better than endless repetition or forceful obedience.
A flocked coat with responsibility
Around one year the coat begins to form flocks. These must be separated skilfully so air reaches the skin and movement remains free without trapped dirt, urine or painful pulling. Inspect skin, ears, feet and armpits and dry the heavy coat completely. “Little maintenance” never means no inspection. Illness may require practical shortening.
Health and choosing a breeder
Dutch club rules require hips and advise elbows. Also ask about eyes, thyroid disease, skin, gastric torsion and family longevity. Review original results and relatedness in this small population. Meet adults carrying a mature coat and ask the breeder for practical teaching. Choose free movement, stable behaviour and healthy skin over maximum flock length.
