Quick to learn and react

The Tervuren is versatile and strongly focused on its people. It notices movement and tension early and may bark, chase or guard without guidance. Train through rewards and short precise sessions, socialise for neutrality and deliberately teach relaxation. Not every puppy suits a busy family. Recovery ability matters more than spectacular drive.

Work and long coat

Combine long walks with tracking, obedience or controlled sport. More activity alone does not resolve overstimulation. Schedule sleep and quiet days. Brush weekly and more during shedding, particularly behind ears and around ruff and trousers. Keep the athlete lean and postpone heavy jumping and sharp turns until physical maturity.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch breed clubs require hip screening. Also ask about elbows, ECVO eyes and family records on epilepsy, stomach cancer, thyroid disease, gastric torsion and fear. Crosses with Groenendael or Malinois have been conditionally possible since March 2025 to support diversity. Review original results and select stable social parents and low relatedness over colour or coat volume.
