Working drive and behaviour

Malinois were developed to react quickly, guard and work for long periods. Dedicated working lines can be exceptionally intense and are unsuitable for casual owners. Calm early socialisation and skilled reward-based training are essential. Teach waiting, sleeping and recovery as deliberately as action. A garden, long walk or constant ball throwing cannot replace purposeful work and may simply create a fitter, more aroused dog with poor impulse control.

Exercise and everyday management

Brush the short double coat weekly and more during shedding. Daily life should combine varied movement, scent work, obedience and controlled strength or coordination exercises. Increase jumping, stopping and hard turns gradually in a young dog. Use secure boundaries and actively manage contact with children, unfamiliar dogs and small animals. A Malinois that practises excitement without settling can develop difficult chasing, guarding or biting behaviour.

Health and choosing a breeder

Hip dysplasia and degenerative lumbosacral stenosis are leading Dutch concerns in the Malinois. Haemangioma, idiopathic epilepsy, osteoarthritis and elbow dysplasia also occur. Dutch breed clubs require hip assessment. NVBH also requires elbow screening and advises ECVO eye examination. Review original results and ask about seizures and spinal or joint disease among relatives. Also assess parental behaviour and the purpose of the exact working or show line.
