Rare working variety
The Laekenois shares the speed, vigilance and sensitivity of other Belgian Shepherds. It needs no harsh approach but predictable boundaries, rewards and carefully developed neutrality around visitors and dogs. Daily tracking, obedience or work-oriented sport fits well provided recovery and sleep are trained as seriously as action.
Rough-coat care
Use a coarse comb or brush and periodically hand-strip dead coat. Shaving damages protective texture. Inspect beard, ears, skin and feet after outdoor work. Increase jumping and fast sport turns gradually and maintain lean weight. Sufficient mental work prevents guarding or movement control from becoming the dog's self-appointed job.
Health and choosing a breeder
Hip evaluation is mandatory in Dutch club rules and elbows are advised. Also ask about eyes, epilepsy, stomach cancer, thyroid disease and family behaviour. The population is small, and crosses with Malinois have been conditionally allowed since March 2025. Explicitly discuss diversity and inbreeding. Choose stable recovery and durable movement over rarity or sharpness.
