Sensitive versatile shepherd

Groenendaels switch rapidly between observation and action. They can excel in tracking, obedience and sport but learn unwanted patterns just as fast. Socialise for calm recovery and train with rewards, predictable routines and a taught off-switch. Countering overstimulation with ever more action usually makes a sensitive dog less settled.

Coat and daily work

Brush the long double coat weekly and thoroughly during shedding, watching for mats behind ears and around trousers and ruff. Long exercise, scent work and short precise training are needed every day, alternated with genuine rest. Delay repeated jumping and rapid turns until maturity and keep the light athlete muscular.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch breed clubs require hip screening. Also ask about elbows, ECVO eyes and family records on epilepsy, stomach cancer, thyroid disease, gastric torsion and behaviour. Since March 2025 certain variety crosses are permitted to support diversity. Ask how relatedness was managed. Select stable nerves, free movement and transparent family records over intense colour or extreme drive.
