A terrier beneath the curls

A Bedlington is not a soft ornament but a fast persistent terrier. It needs daily exercise, play and scent work and may hunt or respond fiercely when boundaries are missing. Train recall, dog interactions and handling positively from an early age. Secure running provides a better outlet than uncontrolled freedom around small wildlife.

Specialist coat care

Comb weekly to the skin and have the coat clipped regularly into a functional shape. Inspect ears, skin and feet. Excessive show sculpting must not impair sight or movement. Keep the lean athletic dog well muscled and brush teeth daily. Build sprinting and jumping gradually while growing.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch club rules require COMMD1 DNA testing for copper toxicosis. Request the exact genetic status of both parents and ask how carriers are mated. Also discuss liver values, ECVO eyes, patellas, kidneys, thyroid disease and longevity. A DNA-clear dog can develop other disease. Review original documents and select genetic diversity and stable behaviour.
