Power and sensitivity

The Beauceron herded and guarded livestock and may respond independently to movement or threat. It matures slowly and can require eighteen months to two years of intensive guidance. Socialise for neutrality, train through rewards and clear boundaries and prevent guarding from rewarding itself. Shouting or physical force can increase fear and conflict in this powerful sensitive dog.

Work and physical development

Long walks, tracking, obedience, canicross or another controlled task fit better than aimless running. Increase load gradually until growth is complete. Brush the short double coat more during shedding and inspect the double rear dewclaws. Keep the dog lean and teach calm management around visitors, children and dogs.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch clubs require hip evaluation. One also requires elbows and a breed behaviour assessment belongs in responsible selection. Request original hip and elbow results and discuss gastric torsion, heart, eyes, epilepsy and family behaviour. Meet both parents away from their home ground. Choose stable recovery, free movement and low relatedness over maximum size or sharpness.
