Cheerful working dog

Beardies are agile drovers that enjoy involvement and often respond exuberantly. Reward four feet on the floor, waiting calmly and recovery after stimulation. Harsh correction fits their sensitive nature poorly. Daily exercise, tracking, obedience or a suitable sport prevent barking and frantic behaviour from becoming their own outlet.

Coat care to the skin

The long double coat quickly conceals mats, ticks and skin disease. Comb in layers from the skin, especially armpits, groin, ears and feet. A practical trim can support welfare, but shaving removes protection. Keep sight clear, inspect ear canals and dry a wet coat fully. Maintain lean weight and introduce jumping gradually.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch club requires official hip evaluation. Also request current ECVO eye examination and family records on Addison's disease, thyroid disease, autoimmunity, epilepsy and longevity. DNA tests can help manage certain conditions but do not replace clinical screening. Review original results and adult relatives and choose stable recovery and functional moderate coat.
