Specialist tracking dog
This Bavarian hound follows wounded game precisely through difficult terrain. It is not an ordinary sport or family dog: without real tracking it lacks its central task. Train quietly and consistently, protect its close bond with one handler and socialise without forcing contact. Lead and long line remain important safety tools outside work.
Condition and care
The short coat only needs weekly brushing, but inspect ears, feet, ticks and muscles after every terrain session. Increase endurance gradually and maintain lean weight. Schedule recovery after hard work and watch the deep-chested dog for gastric torsion signs. Solitary kennel housing never replaces company and cooperation.
Health and choosing a breeder
The Dutch Brakken Club currently requires no screening. Nonetheless request official hip and elbow evaluation and a current eye examination, plus family information on epilepsy, kidney and heart disease and working longevity. Puppies may be restricted to hunting homes. Verify pedigree, relatedness and import papers and choose a stable recoverable working line over sharpness or appearance.
